The Pleasure Pier

(40 min video)

Brighton, England, October 2005

Brighton in England has two Piers. One is called the Brighton Pier, in use for entertainment, and visited daily by many people. The other one, the West Pier, completely burnt out in 2003 and partly collapsed into the sea after a storm. This pier is the oldest pier in Britain and 1970, is listed as a monument since 1971, being an important example of Victorian architecture.
Using a small digital video camera, I interviewed the people of Brighton and asked their opinion about the future of the West Pier. The tourists on the beach, the fisherman, the local government, the hairdresser, the historian, the actor, a bunch of schoolgirls, a BBC broadcaster, the artist, architects and engineers. But more than a documentary about the West Pier, this film is about the people of Brighton and their interests.
